Who We Are โ€” and Why We Started This Site

We're four people who got tired of finding out the hard way that a casino wasn't as good as its reviews claimed. So we started testing them properly.

The honest version of our story

Best Casinos Australia started in 2023, but the idea came from a frustrating experience two years before that. James Mitchell โ€” our lead analyst โ€” had been playing at an Australian-friendly online casino for a few months. He'd built up a decent balance, requested a withdrawal, and then waited. And waited. After 11 days, three support tickets, and one very unhelpful live chat conversation, his money finally arrived.

The casino had a 4.5-star review on a major comparison site. The review mentioned nothing about withdrawal delays. That disconnect bothered him enough that he started documenting his own experiences โ€” timing withdrawals, noting which support agents actually helped, calculating whether bonuses were genuinely worth claiming.

A year later, he brought in three colleagues he'd worked with in and around the gaming industry: Sarah O'Connor, who'd spent years in fintech before moving into bonus analysis; David Chen, a payment systems engineer; and Emma Hartley, a UX researcher who had an uncanny ability to identify when an interface was designed to frustrate rather than help.

We launched quietly. No press release, no social media blitz โ€” just a page listing ten casinos we'd actually used and could stand behind. The response was more than we expected, and we've been building on it since.

What we believe about casino reviews

Most casino review sites are, to put it plainly, not very useful. They list the same 50 casinos, give almost all of them 4+ stars, and bury any meaningful criticism in vague language like "withdrawal times could be faster." That tells you nothing about whether you'll actually get paid.

We think a useful review has to do a few specific things:

  • Request at least one withdrawal and document how long it actually took
  • Calculate the real expected value of the welcome bonus โ€” not just state the headline number
  • Contact support with a genuinely difficult question, not just "how do I deposit"
  • Test the mobile experience properly, on a real phone on a real mobile connection
  • Tell you what the site does poorly, not just what it does well

Every casino on our list has been through this process. We don't list casinos we haven't personally withdrawn from. That's the line we won't cross.

Our promise: We earn affiliate commissions when you click through and sign up at a casino we recommend. This is how the site pays for itself. But our rankings are not influenced by commission rates โ€” if they were, we'd be recommending casinos that pay us the most, not the ones that treat players best. We've turned down higher-paying deals to keep casinos we didn't believe in off this list.

The team

James Mitchell
James Mitchell
Lead Casino Analyst

Former gaming compliance officer. 12 years reviewing AU online casinos โ€” licence validation, RTP audits, and the T&C deep-dives that most reviewers skip. James is the reason we have a "rejected" list of sites we've tested but won't recommend.

Sarah O'Connor
Sarah O'Connor
Bonus Specialist

Sydney-based. Calculates the actual expected value of every welcome offer before we publish it. She's reviewed 500+ bonus structures and has a particular talent for spotting the hidden terms that turn a "200% bonus" into something unplayable.

David Chen
David Chen
Payments & Security

FinTech engineer turned payment auditor. Has personally processed over 1,400 real withdrawals across 54+ casinos, timing each one. Also verifies SSL certificates, KYC processes, and whether crypto payouts match the advertised speeds.

Emma Hartley
Emma Hartley
UX & Player Experience

Former senior UX researcher at a major AU bank. Tests every casino on iPhone and Android, evaluates support response times at odd hours, and flags interfaces that seem designed to make withdrawals harder to find than deposits.

How to reach us

If you've had an experience โ€” good or bad โ€” with a casino we recommend, we want to hear about it. Player feedback genuinely influences our rankings. You can reach us through our contact page, and we read everything that comes in, even if we can't always reply individually.

If you've spotted an error in one of our reviews, please flag it. We'd rather be corrected than wrong.
